Thats right.. I’m back. Well I am coming back slowly (this was meant to be up on the first but i got distracted with family time over the holiday period – my Daughter turned 7 just after New Years)
I haven’t posted on here since 2019. Man that is weird, that seems like a lifetime ago. I had high ambitions for myself to return last year but life hit my family and I hard last year. I stepped down from my role as manager where I work because of stress. My fiancé changed careers. We lost family members. And the hardest of all we found out our daughter has a brain tumor.
On top of everything we had going on within our family, we were dealing with COVID stuff as well. Here in New Zealand that meant many Level changes (each level was a different level of freedom). This meant for a lot of the year last year, we could not open the business I work for to the public in our normal way. Meant a lot of time at home being anxious and bored with the family. Thankfully we have moved to a different system here in New Zealand that helps the country deal with the COVID outbreaks.
Hoping 2022 brings better things for my family and I. We definately need it.
This year we have some exciting things planned:
* Buying Our First Home
* Getting Married to my Best friend
* Attending Friends Weddings
Just to name a few. This year will be a big year and I am going to slowly get myself back into blogging regularly.
Hi there. I am Ashleigh. I live in the rural town of Ohaupo, New Zealand. I am 28 going on 29 in April. I have a young daughter who just turned 7. I am the Assistant Manager of a café – I am looking at changing careers but I have no idea what I want to do.
Something most everyone wants to know… do you have any pets?
No I don’t. Only because our current rental property doesn’t allow pets. But over the years I have had many. We are looking at getting either a cat or dog when we buy a house this year.
What is your favorite thing to drink?
I live on coffee – which is the best part of working in a café. Coffee is the elixir of life. Other than that I drink iced tea or water mainly.
What is your favorite season?
This is a hard one because I love Summer – the sun, the beach, the long days – but I hate being too hot.
Also love winter, but hate the rain that comes with it – Waikato winters are just full of cold rain.
So I would have to say a warm Autumn would be my favourite season. It also happens to be my birthday in Autumn.
Do you have any special talents?
Ummm does baking count? I love to bake anything from cake to brownie to cookies. I am pretty good at it too _ or that’s what I have been told anyway.
When and why did you start your blog?
I technically started this blog in April of 2019. I had the idea for a few years but never followed through with it. I was very self conscious of what people would think (still am to some extent) – and to my surprise people thought it was a fantastic idea.
When I was in Business School studying a Bachelors degree in entrepreneurship I was tasked with writing a business plan for a business idea I had. I have always had this dream of owning a bookstore/café. A place to browse new and used books while having your fill of coffee (or tea) and other treats. I wanted it to be a place for people who loved books to gather. I got immense praise by my tutor at the time, loving the uniqueness of the idea. This is something I would pressure if ever having the opportunity. But the blog sparked from this idea. If I couldn’t plunge straight into the book community like that I still wanted to be a part of it in some way. Then I finally took the plunge after being in a not-so-great place almost 3 years ago, I wanted to do something for myself again. And the A Page Once Turned blog was born.
When I started I had very little knowledge of how to run a blog and social media to match, I was a hard couple of months trying to figure it out as well as establishing myself – which I am still working on, still trying to figure out how I fit. But I have my foot in the door of the book community, and I love it. I love being able to support Authors and bloggers alike in any way I can.
I am excited to meet new community members as I expand my blog and step further into the book community.
What is something that you wish you knew about blogging when you first started?
Well firstly, I wished I had researched setting up a blog more before. I dived straight in and have been muddling through it since. Other than that I got stuck in the wormhole of only posting reviews, release blitz etc. And thought that was all book blogging was. I had to stick to just that but this year I have so many ideas – book related and not. I am going to branch out and write what I want. This will hopefully help with my consistency issues with posting. I got bored of repeating the same posts time and time again.
Instead of limiting myself to certain categories, I am going to limit how may sign ups I do so I am not swapped with them all.
What has been the hardest part about blogging?
I covered some of this in the questions above but there are 2 things that stand out for me they are:
- Trying to navigate how to actually start a blog. It was much more complex than I was expecting – there are still some things I am trying to figure out.
- Content. When I started I got stuck in the rabbit hole of reviews and book promos – which are all well and good. But I lost myself in trying to keep up with it all. I lost interest in reading because it felt more forced as I was trying to keep a blog alive. But this year will be different. I will be branching out and posting more of what I want to write.
What has been the most rewarding part of blogging?
As lame as it may sound but the community. The book community is so rewarding to be a part of. The people you meet along the way that enjoy the same thing as you. Like any community it isn’t perfect but there are some absolute gems in it. I enjoy being able to talk to people that have common interests – not maybe people in my family or friends are readers so its great to have that elsewhere.
Do you write your posts a head of time or write them the day of posting?
I want to be a planner – I will need it to some extent in my life, with a full time job and a child. But starting out I will probably be writing day of or day before until I get more posts written in my spare time.
Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
Picking just one author is next to impossible for me. When people ask me that, they need to be more specific with what they are asking. You cannot just ask me who my favourite author is.. So I have tried to pick Just 5 authors whom I ADORE and why I do.
- Kandi Stiener – My Favourite Queen of Angsty Romance
- W. Winters – My Favourite Queen of Dark Gritty Romance
- Sarah J. Maas – My First Young Adult Fantasy Author
- Nicholas Sparks – First Author That Made me Fall in Love with Reading
- LJ Evans – Love the Way She Writes. Its not Fluffy nor is it Super Angsty like Kandi.
What genre do you read the most?
Romance usually. Will pick up anything that is romance based. But trying to branch out to different reads such as Fantasy.
What genre surprised you by how much you love it?
MC or Mafia. I didn’t think I would like the grit as much as I really do
Which popular book didn’t live up to the hype for you?
As much as it pains me to say this…. Harry Potter. I didn’t get it. I appreciate the books for what they are but I don’t really understand all the hoopla around it. I tried and failed to read the books. Took me 3 years to read the first 3. The audiobooks were okay. I got through them only because of them. (Please don’t come for me)..
Who are some popular authors you haven’t read?
- BB Reid
- M. Robinson
- Monica James
- Christina Lauren
- Alexis Winters
- J. Sterling
- C.L Matthews
- Anne Malone
- Colleen Hoover
- Amo Jones
- Saffron Kent
Just to name a few. There are so many authors that I want to read I had to stop adding to the list.
What upcoming release are you excited to read?
I haven’t been keeping up with the upcoming releases. So honestly cannot tell anyone.
Do you listen to music while reading?
Nope. I find outside noise so distracting. Most of the time I have to read with my noise-cancelling ear buds because of the constant noise that comes from my daughter and fiancé.
Where else can we find you online?
Thank you for reading, if you have made it this far. Here is to 2022 being a better year.
